Surfing legend Robby Naish narrates PAUL – in Official Selection in San Sebastian

// 14th of August, 2015

Produced by JaJa Film Productions in co-production with Arteffects, and executive produced by UK producer Mike Downey from Film and Music Entertainment. PAUL is a documentary film about a 13 year old boy from the Dunoon township in Cape Town, South Africa, named Paul. Paul has a dream, a dream he thinks about all day; he wants to be surfer. But boys from Dunoon township don’t surf.  There is no transportation to the beach and there is no money for equipment. Fortunately, there is a non-profit organization that picks up Paul to go surfing at the white beaches of Blouberg.

Surf legend and sports icon Robby Naish is the voice over of the documentary. Naish, a strong believer in the power and importance of sport for the development of children and their communities, was immediately touched by this story.

"Sport is a very powerful and positive aspect of a child’s life. What sports did for me and my life is almost unimaginable and anything that I can do to promote sport as a positive influence in peoples lives, young and old, is something I want to do. Being involved with the Laureus Sport For Good foundation for many years, I have seen first hand how important sport can be for children, especially in underprivileged parts of the world or high risk communities. At the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards, Nelson Mandela gave a speech that started with "Sport has the power to change the world…" - the story of Paul is a wonderful example of how sport can be a shining light in somebody’s life."

The World Premiere of this brand  new documentary will take place during the San Sebastian Film Festival, in the Savage Cinema Section. Savage Cinema is the adventure and action sports films section created in 2014 in collaboration with Red Bull Media House. A pioneer initiative bringing the most ambitious producers of the genre to San Sebastian along with enormously admired moviemakers and athletes who present the world of European premieres of their latest productions. Paul is the first Dutch production to be selected for the Savage Cinema Section of San Sebastian.

"The story of Paul will inspire people and change the perception of children from deprived areas forever and its a honor for us that the World Premiere of the documentary will take place at such a renowned festival as San Sebastian", says producer Jamillah van der Hulst.

"PAUL is an attempt to give a voice to an extraordinary brave individual, who through perseverance in sport, is finding a way of pulling himself out of very difficult circumstances." Says executive producer Mike Downey, "This is the second production we have partnered with JaJa on after Streetkids United II  -The Girls from Rio  - both films are also slated to screen at Cinekid, the Dutch film event in October. Our third collaboration with JaJa will be Streetkids United III - set during Olympic year in Rio. "

The documentary is directed by the talented directors Victor van Vloten and Robert van Wingerden. "In the time we followed Paul and his friends it gave us a mixed feeling of joy and sorrow. They enjoy everything they do and grab any chance or opportunity that they get. Yet you feel that they are in a situation and environment that will not change. We tried to bring about that feeling and that attitude. Shrug your shoulders and get going."
